The Two Military Schools in New Jersey

• Marine Academy of Science and Technology— Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) is as award-winning part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District, which runs five career academies. The other academies are: Academy of Allied Health and Science (AAHS); Biotechnology High School (BTHS); Communications High School (CHS); and High Technology High School (HTHS).  Founded in 1981, Marine Academy of Science and Technology is part of the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology.

Besides four-year Naval Junior Reserve Office Training Corps participation (in lieu of Physical Education), students are required to take a general college-preparatory course load with 3 years of laboratory science, 3 years of marine technology/engineering, and 4 years of math, English, social studies, and naval science. Four years of language (choice of Latin, French, and Spanish) are also offered, and students must complete three years at minimum. The school is on a block schedule with 80 classes and an alternating Day 1/Day 2 schedule. An hour-long lunch period allows time to eat and participate in extracurricular activities.

• United States Military Academy Preparatory School—United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS), established in 1946, serves candidates recommended by West Point—it does not accept direct applications. The school is sometimes called “West Point Prep” or “the Prep School.” Those who are enrolled at the school may be soldiers who are serving in the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserves, as well as a small number of civilian high school graduates who are selected by West Point and authorized by the Department of the Army for enlistment in the Army Reserves with the express purpose of attending USMAPS. The goal of USMAPS is to prepare candidates academically, physically, and in military knowledge and training for the challenges of attending the United States Military Academy at West Point. Those accepted are high school graduates or enlisted personnel who are “prepped” to meet West Point’s admission standards. The Admissions Committee at West Point will accept Cadet Candidates who complete the USMAPS program successfully, receive a recommendation from the Commandant at USMAPS, and who meet Department of Defense officer candidate admissions standards.
