New York is home to three private college preparatory military schools. They are Christian Brothers Academy, a Lasallian Catholic all-boys school for grades 6 through 12 in Albany, New York (there is also a Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey); LaSalle Institute, a Lasallian Catholic all-boys school for grades 6 through 12 in Troy, New York, and New York Military Academy, a coeducational day and boarding school for grades 7 through 12 in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. The Three Military Schools in New York
•Christian Brothers Academy—Christian Brothers Academy began in 1859, growing out of an orphan asylum started in 1854, and was accredited by the United States government as a military academy in 1937. It currently has a 126-acre campus, and close to half of the boys come from Albany, while the others commute.
While the Christian Brothers Academy junior high program prepares the students for the college preparatory curriculum in the high school, the high school offers AP courses in Biology, Calculus, English, European History, and United States History, as well as four years of physical education and military science, and opportunities to study French, Spanish, and/or Latin. Fourteen interscholastic sports, including Rifle, Bowling, and Soccer, and 33 activities, including Color Guard, Drill Team, Mock Trial, and Concert Band.
• LaSalle Institute —LaSalle Institute, established in 1850 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, has a 29-acre campus. The student body of 400 students is staffed by 36 lay teachers, seven Christian Brothers, and one sister of Saint Joseph.
The LaSalle Institute graduation requirements for the high school include 4 years each of English, History, Mathematics, and Science, 3 years of a Foreign Language, 2 years of JROTC, and other requirements and electives. There are 9 AP courses offered, and students may also enroll in French and Spanish I and II at SUNY Albany and/or Calculus I and II through Hudson Valley Community College.
LaSalle Institute offers 14 interscholastic sports including Hockey and Tennis, and more than 16 other extracurricular activities, including Ski Club, Anime Club, and Paintball Club.
• New York Military Academy—New York Military Academy, established in 1889, currently serves 100 high school students, 20 to 30 in each grade of the upper school. The school offers six “tracks of intention,” including:
